Superfast Leicestershire to undergo £2.7 million expansion

Around 2000 more homes and businesses will be connected up to BT's Openreach network as a result.

The ongoing Superfast Leicester project is to undergo a new £2.7 million extension, Leicestershire County Council has announced.

Having officially begun back in 2013, it’s seen 96% of homes and businesses in the county receive a fibre-to-the-premise (FTTP) connection to BT’s Openreach network so far.

This new arm aims to bring superfast broadband to the large percentage of properties across the towns and cities of north-west Leicestershire which still don’t have access to these kinds of speeds.

Locations which will be targeted include Charnwood, Hinckley & Bosworth and Blaby.

Building work on the extension doesn’t have specific start time beyond the end of 2019 or any kind of completion date.

It’s predicted that around 2000 residents will benefit from the project.

As well as FTTP, this connection is also gigabit capable to allow for blazingly fast speeds of up to 10Gbps when the technology becomes more widespread.

“We’ve already done a huge amount of work across Leicestershire, in partnership with Leicestershire County Council, and we’re delighted to be going even further,” said Matt Bateman, Openreach Director for Infrastructure.

“This latest phase of work will help us make fast and reliable broadband available to many of the most rural parts of the county, and there is no doubt it’ll make a huge difference to people living and working there.”
