Openreach to deliver superfast broadband to extra premises in Suffolk
5,000 more homes and 550 more businesses will have access to speeds of 24Mbps and above.
As part of an ongoing scheme, Openreach has announced that they’ll be providing superfast broadband to additional homes and businesses in Suffolk.
BT’s infrastructure arm won the contract to carry out the third phase of the Better Broadband for Suffolk (BBS) project which will connect up an extra 5,000 homes and 550 businesses there.
So far BBS, which was bankrolled by £64 million in public funding, has extended its reach to 96% premises across the county giving them all access to speeds of 24Mbps and above.
The service is mostly made up of fibre-to-the-cabinet broadband with a small portion of it consisting of fibre-to-the-premise.
The currently ongoing second phase is expected to finish at the end of this year with the third phase then commencing straight after.
It’s hoped that the effort to connect up the remaining homes and businesses will be completed by September 2022.
“Our ambition has always been, and will always be, to achieve total Superfast Broadband coverage across Suffolk,” said the leader of Suffolk County Council Matthew Hicks.
“With the contract now being signed on the third phase of the programme, we are closer to realising that goal. This will mean that some of the most rural and hard to reach premises in Suffolk will enjoy equal or faster speeds than some major cities and towns across the UK.”
